There are various kinds of cotton available on the market, which all have their unique textures and surfaces. Some kinds of cotton provide a more rough and matte textured finish, while others provide a softer and smoother surface. Despite everyone’s preferences, the most well-loved and recognized is Egyptian cotton.
What Does 100% Egyptian Cotton Mean?
There are three commonly used cotton globally, which all range in terms of quality and the soft hand-feel it provides. Most bedding today is comprised using Upland cotton. Upland cotton makes up almost 90% of the cotton produced around the world. The remaining 10% of the cotton produced worldwide includes primarily Pima and an even lesser percentage of cotton is Egyptian, making it the rarest.
Both cotton types are referred to as extra-long staple cotton, which is a name given to them because of their long cotton fibers. Individual cotton fibers that are longer can add softness to the texture of the fabric, which is why Egyptian and Pima kinds of cotton can produce softer fabric. Long fibers also add strength while retaining a luxuriously smooth and soft touch to the fabric. The fabric produced by these types of cotton is capable of resisting pilling, tearing, and fraying among many other attributes.
Origin Makes the Difference
Although both cotton types share a similar train of characteristics, there are vast inherent differences in terms of their quality and look. Pima cotton is within the Egyptian Cotton family but is grown in the United States, where environmental factors are temperate and dry.
Egyptian Cotton is exclusively grown around the Nile River, as cotton grown anywhere else will not produce the same well-loved and extremely soft feel. Environmental and climate conditions such as Egypt’s heavy rains, extreme humidity, and warm climate yield beautifully dense and soft fabric that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
This tough and exclusive terrain only found near the Nile River along with Egypt’s abundantly fertile land creates growing conditions needed to produce high-quality, soft, and dense Egyptian Cotton.
Many manufacturers try to imitate this rare cotton by producing products that include some Egyptian Cotton mixed with cheaper and more readily found cotton such as Pima or Upland. They market and label their products as 100% Egyptian Cotton, violating not only federal laws and regulations but their consumer’s trust.
